Meat Maketh the Man - 3 Awesome Father’s Day Recipes That Dad Will Love
No matter what your skill level in the kitchen is, you’ll be set for success with these 3 awesome Father’s Day recipes.
Starting simple with the seriously underrated yet always superior calzone. Basically a pizza all wrapped up in itself, everything is good in a calzone! So whatever dad likes, feel free to add it in.
First up on the menu we’re going to make a classic pepperoni, but enough talking - let’s start cooking!
What You’ll Need
Pizza dough or bases
Salt, pepper and herbs to taste
1. Preheat oven to 200° and grease two large baking sheets.
2. If using dough, split it into 4 and roll out each into a small pizza base.
3. Pour pizza sauce in middle of base, then dot with ricotta and top with pepperoni and mozzarella.
4. Gently fold the base over itself. Wet your fingers and dampen the edge and pinch all the way around so there are no gaps.
5. Repeat with remaining bases. Transfer to prepared baking sheets. Brush tops with oil and sprinkle with salt. Using kitchen scissors or a sharp knife, slit tops in 2 to 3 spots to crreate vents.
Bake until tops are golden - usually 20 minutes. Then take them out of the oven and let them cool for 5 minutes before eating.
Pepper Hot Ribs
Okay, we have the easy feed done. Now let’s step it up a notch with this mouth-watering, one-pot ribs recipe. We’re using a pressure cooker to get this done quick, but a slow cooker will work just as good. After all, what else smells like dad’s day than the wafting scent of succulent meat from the kitchen.
What You’ll Need
Ribs (as many as you like)
1/2 tsp. paprika
1/2 tsp. mustard powder
1/2 tsp. cayenne
1 cup water
1. Start by checking your ribs - do they have a thin membrane over the bones? You’ll need to remove this carefully with a knife first.
2. Now the rib rub! Take a small bowl, and stir in your brown sugar, salt, garlic powder, pepper, paprika, mustard powder and cayenne. Mix it together and rub it into your ribs.
3. Set up your pressure cooker (or slow cooker) with a little bit of water, then add in your ribs.
4. Pressure cook on high for about 20 minutes. For a slow cooker go a little (or a lot) longer, and add in some bbq sauce for good measure.
5. Once your ribs are looking ready to serve, pull them out and cover with the rest of your sauce. Now all that’s left is to eat and enjoy.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken
Move over colonel, we’ve got it from here. We’re using chicken breast, which means it’ll be thinner than the usual bone-in fried chicken dinner packs. But it’s also going to be way more crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and delicious every which way.
What You’ll Need
4 chicken breasts
1 c. buttermilk
1 large egg
3/4 c. flour
1/4 c. cornstarch
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
Oil for frying
1. Wrap your chicken breasts in plastic wrap as flat as possible, then pound away with a meat mallet or rolling pin until about 1cm thick.
2. Set up your coating area: in one bowl whisk together the buttermilk and egg, and in another the flour, cornstarch, salt and spices.
3. Dunk one chicken breast in the milk mix with one hand, then pass to the other hand to coat in the flour bowl.
4. Fry time! In a large pan over medium heat, pour in your oil up to about 2cm deep. Get it hot (not smoking), and then add in one piece of chicken at a time. Fry until golden brown (~8mins), then set aside on a paper towel lined plate to dry.
5. Fried chicken is great on its own or you can really make it a meal with some mashed potatoes and gravy.
